4 ‘saboteurs’ killed in city
Dhaka: Four suspected ‘saboteurs’ were killed in two separate incidents in the capital’s Mirpur area on Sunday night.
The identities of the deceased could not be ascertained immediately.
Police claimed three of them died due to ‘mass beating’ in Kazipara while another one was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police in Kallyanpur.
However, sources at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) said bullet injuries were found at different parts of the three youths who were reported to be killed in a mass beating.
Mirpur police sub-inspector Muzammel said that local people caught three suspected ‘saboteurs’ with several petrol bombs at West Kazipara around 10:30pm on Sunday.
The people beat them mercilessly before informing the police, SI Nazmul said.
Being informed, SI Masud Parvez of Mirpur police went to the spot and rushed the three youths to DMCH where on-duty doctors declared them dead around 1:20am on Monday.
In another incident, police arrested another youth while he was allegedly setting off a crude bomb targeting a BRTC bus near Mirpur-2 intersection around 9:45pm on Sunday night, duty officer SI Nazmul said.
Following the detention of the alleged saboteur, a team of Mirpur Police Station took him to Kallyanpur near the House Building and Research Institute to arrest his cohorts around 1:15am on Monday, he added.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the accomplices of the alleged saboteur fired gunshots and charged petrol bombs at them. At one stage, the law enforcers retaliated by firing gunshots at the suspected cohorts of the saboteur, leaving one of them with bullet injuries.
Sub-Inspector Zahirul Islam rushed the injured to DMCH where the on-duty doctors declared him dead around 1:45 am.
