Dhaka: A rights group protesting recent violence against women and girl children on Monday urged the government to implement the ‘Domestic Violence (Prevention and Protection) Act 2010’ appropriately to stop violence in the household.

The Citizen Initiative against Domestic Violence (CIDV) came up with the urge at a human chain programme in front of National Press Club in the capital.

The speakers at the human chain said domestic violence against women and girl children has increased disturbingly in the last couple of months while the torture method and cruelty has reached intense level.

Upholding media report statistics, they said 1175 reports had been published on sexual torture and forced sexual assault while 1205 reports have been published on domestic violence till October 2015.

The rights activists said women face more violence in the family in Bangladeshi society while most of the people do not give any importance to it, saying it is a family matter.

They said though the Domestic Violence (Prevention and Protection) Act 2010 was effective since December 30, 2010, there is no visible execution of this act due to absence of publicity, mass awareness and relevant law enforcers’ lack of viable knowledge.

Members of CIDV said they have faced difficulties like people’s lack of awareness about the act, limited enforcement officials, delays in case disposal and absence of funds in the national budget to implement the act.
