Road accidents claim 9 lives

Dhaka: Nine people were killed and 12 were injured in six separate road accidents in Sirajganj, Bogra and Gazipur districts on Saturday.

In Sirajganj, six people, including three of a family, were killed and one was injured in three separate road accidents.

Police said a rod-laden lorry rammed the four family members -- Rawshan Hossain Saddam, 35, his wife Dolly, 25, their sons Siam, 7, and Tamim, 2 -- as the driver of the vehicle lost control over the steering while taking a turn at Hatikumrul intersection under Salanga Police Station in the evening.

Later, the injured was taken to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital, said Sergeant Abdul Gani of Hatikumrul Highway Police Station, adding police seized the lorry and arrested the driver.

In another accident, SM Amirul Islam Groho, 59, chairman of Naogaon Union Parisahd in Tarash upazila, was killed as a bus knocked down his motorcycle in Bohuti area in Sadar upazila in the morning.

Officer-in-Charge of Sadar Police Station Hela Uddin said a speeding bus of 'Suborna Enterprise' hit his motorbike from the opposite direction on Sirajganj-Nakla regional highway in the area around 11am, leaving him critically injured.

Locals rescued Amirul and took him to Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Apart from, two people were killed and 11 others injured when a bus hit a roadside tree at Rohabari in Kazipur upazila in the early hours.

The accident took place when the Dhaka-bound bus of 'Sumon Enterprise' from Kurigram hit the roadside tree as its driver lost control over the steering around 4am, leaving its supervisor Mrinal Chandra Roy of Kurigram district, and another unidentified man dead on the spot and injured 11 passengers.

The injured were admitted to Upazila health Complex.

In Gazipur, Lelin Mollah, sells representative of Dutch-Bangla Bank mobile banking, was killed in a road accident at Sreepur MC Bazaar area on Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in the morning.

Delwar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Maona Highway Police Station, said the accident took place when a covered van knocked down the motorcycle of Lelin, a resident of Dakkhin Barpota village of the Sreepur upazila, around 11am, leaving him dead on the spot.

In Bogra, two men were killed in two separate incidents at Jamadar Pukur bus stand area and in front Khorna Union Parishad in Shahjahanpur upazila.

Police said, Bulu Mia, 55, son of late Ahmmad Ali, died on the spot when a bus hit his motorcycle from backside at Jamadar Pukur bus stand while the victim was going to Jamadar Pukur Bazar for purchasing rice around 12 pm.

In another incident, Md Jalal, 35, a CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver by profession, was killed at in front of Khorna Union Parishad while a rice-laden truck turned turtle and fell on him.

On information police recovered the bodies and handed them over to respective family members, the OC added.
