7 killed in Rangpur road accidents
Rangpur: Seven people, including a couple, were killed and five others critically injured in two separate road accidents at different places in Rangpur on Monday, police said.
Retired bank official Mahbubur Rahman, 55, and his wife Nazma Rahman, 44, of Etakumari village under Pirgachha upazila were killed on the spot after a bus hit their running motorcycle at Mahiganj area in the city at about 2:00pm.
One pedestrian Sanu Mian, 40, of the locality was also killed in the accident as the bus entered into a roadside rice mill premises after hitting the motorcycle there.
Besides, four persons were killed and five others injured after a running van of the Jail Guards of Rangpur Central Jail hit an auto rickshaw at Soleyasha Bridge on the Rangpur-Syedpur Highway under Gangachara upazila here at 5:00pm.
Three passengers of the auto-rickshaw Alhaj Sabur Uddin, 55, Irene Begum, 25, and Anam, 17, of nearby Kharuabadha village were killed on the spot while another unidentified person succumbed on the way to Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH).
The accident occurred when the van of the Jail Guards was returning from Syedpur Airport to Rangpur city after carrying high officials of Rangpur Central Jail to the Airport.
The angry mob immediately attacked the van, set fire on it and blocked vehicular movements on the highway for two and a half hours period since the accident as the road traffic resumed there from 7:30pm following police intervention.
Separate cases were filed in these connections with the respective police stations.
