CPB, SPB want end to attacks on tea workers
Dhaka: Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) and Socialist Party of Bangladesh (SPB) on Saturday urged the local administration to stop attacks on tea workers in Habiganj.
In a joint statement on Saturday, CPB president Mujahidul Islam Selim and SPB general secretary Khalequzzaman expressed concern over an alleged attack by a group of Awami League activists, led by its local unit leader Abu Taher, on the tea workers at Chunarughat in Habiganj in the morning, reports UNB.
Quoting the tea workers, CPB and SPB alleged that the attack was carried out with an aim to grab the agricultural lands in the area which have long been cultivated by the tea workers.
The tea workers have been staging demonstration over the last one month protesting a government decision to take over about 512 acre of the cultivable land in the area for setting up a special economic zone.
The two left-parties also alleged that local BNP leader Seraj and local Jamaat leader Ismail were also involved in the attacks.
They demanded immediate arrest and punishment of those involved in the attack.
