Fire at Kalyanpur slum
A fire broke out at a slum at Natunbazar in Kalyanpur area in the capital on Friday, a day after the High Court stayed an eviction drive there.
Mizanur Rahman, duty officer of the Fire Control Service, said miscreants might have set fire to the slum in the morning.
On information, two firefighting units rushed to the spot but could not start their work soon fearing attack by the agitated slum dwellers who faced an eviction drive on Thursday.
Later, the firefighting units started to extinguish the blaze at about 10:45am with the help of police.
Earlier on Thursday, the National Housing Authority conducted an eviction drive at the slum despite resistance from the slum dwellers facing eviction.
Later, a clash ensued as the slum dwellers threw brickbats to the eviction team.
Meanwhile, the High Court stayed for three months the eviction drive at the slum following a petition moved by rights organisation Ain O Shalish Kendra (ASK).
