Another Gazipur factory explosion victim dies

Dhaka: Another victim of Gazipur factory boiler explosion and fire incident died at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Tuesday morning, raising the death toll from the explosions to eight.

The deceased is Mohammad Kamal Hossain, believed to be 50, a resident of Palash area of Ghorashal in Narsingdi.

Dhaka Medical College police check post duty officer sub-inspector Mozammel Haque told NTV Online Kamal’s was undergoing treatment at the hospital burn unit with 95 per cent burn injuries.

Earlier, on 24 January, a victim of the incident, Abdul Quader, who was suffering from 95 per cent of burn, succumbed to the injuries.

Six people were killed and two others were critically burnt when a boiler of a tire recycling factory exploded on 23 January afternoon.

The injured were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Four deceased are Siddiqa Zebunnesa, assistant teacher of Baroibari Government Primary School, Mohammad Selim Molla, resident of Basugaon, also the security guard of the factory, Kawsar Hossain, a resident of Baghria village of Madaripur, and auto-rickshaw driver Shaddhin.

Fire service deputy director Akhteruzzaman Liton said the boiler in Smart Metal and Chemical Industries Limited exploded with a loud bang at about 4:00pm on Saturday.

Local people said a total of 35 workers work in the factory.

The fire service official said two boilers and oil-laden tank lorry of the factory burst into pieces and scattered around the factory premises.

The factory building also collapsed.

The fire originated from the explosion also destroyed trees and tank lorries near the spot.

Jebunnesa, who was passing by the factory when the explosion took place, died on the spot.

Supervisor Abdul Quader and Kamal Hossain were taken to Shahid Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College in Gazipur, while Shadhin was taken to Tongi Hospital where he died.

Joydebpur, Tongi, and Kaliganj fire fighter went to the spot and brought the fire under control after one and a half hour.

The fire fighters also recovered three bodies from Joydebpur-Pubail road, and two from the factory area.

Shahid Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College duty doctor Abdullah Al Mamun said the injured suffered 90% of burns. They were transferred to DMCH.

Probe Committee

Gazipur deputy commissioner (DC) SM Alam visited Shahid Tajuddin Hospital and the accident spot.

During his hospital visit, DC said a three member investigation committee led by additional district magistrate Mohammad Rahenul Islam was formed in this connection.

He said the families of the victims will be given Tk10, 000 each as funeral expenses.
