11 killed in road accidents
Dhaka: Eleven people were killed and 10 others were injured in six separate road accidents in Comilla, Sirajganj, Mymensingh, Kustia, Dhaka and Sylhet districts on Tuesday, reports UNB.
In Comilla, four people -- three members of a family and their domestic help -- were killed and two others injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a private car at Tamta in Daudkandi upazila on early Tuesday.
The deceased are Dr Fazlul Bari Mithu, 40, associate professor of the National Institute of Mental Health in the capital, his wife Asmaul Husna Bani, 34, their daughter Fahmida Faiza Sneha, 11, and their domestic help Shima, 21, while the injured are Mithu’s daughter Fabiha Bushra Faiza, 8, and son Arian Bari Punna, 4. They hail from Naruli village in Bogra Sadar upazila.
Sergeant Moniruzzaman, in-charge of Gauripur highway police station, said Dr Mithu along with his four family members and the domestic help was returning to Dhaka by the private car after attending a marriage ceremony in Comilla.
The car collided with a Cox’s Bazar-bound bus of ‘Unique Paribahan’ at Tamta at about 2:00am due to poor visibility triggered by dense fog, leaving Dr Mithu, Asmaul and Sneha dead on the spot and Shima, Faiza and Arian injured.
The injured were taken to Gauripur Health Complex where Shima succumbed to her injuries.
Meanwhile, Faiza and Arian were shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
In Sirajganj, three members of a family were killed and two others injured when a truck ploughed through their house in Dwariarpur municipality of Shahjadpur upazila on early Tuesday.
The deceased are Bakkar Sheikh,42, his wife Arbi Khatun,35, and their son Sabbir Hossain,6, while the injured were Sourav,9, son of deceased Bakkar Sheikh, and their neighbour Majnu Miah, 42.
Officer-in-Charge of Shahjadpur Police Station Rezaul Haque said the accident occurred when a molasses-laden truck from Jessore ploughed into a roadside house in the area as its driver lost control over the steering at about 5:30 am, killing the trio on the spot and leaving two others injured.
Police recovered the bodies and sent those to Sirajganj General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
The injured were admitted to Shahjadpur Health Complex. A case was filed in this connection.
In Mymensingh, Eakub Ali, a student of Jahangirnagar University, was killed and two people were injured as a goods-laden truck hit an ambulance at Meherabari in Bhaluka upazila on Tuesday afternoon.
Sub-inspector of Bhaluka Highway Police Station Maruf Rahman said the truck hit the ambulance at the area at about 12:30pm, leaving ambulance passenger Eakub dead and two others injured.
The injured were whisked off to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
However, police seized the truck and arrested its driver Bacchu Miah.
In Kushtia, Keramat Ali, 75, son of Alijan and resident of Amdah village of the upazila, was killed and a young man injured in an accident at Allahrdorgah in Daulatpur upazila on Tuesday morning.
Aminul Islam, officer-in-charge of Daulatpur Police Station, said the accident took place when Keramat was crushed under the wheels of a speeding truck after being hit by a bi-cycle at about 10:30am, leaving him dead and bicycle rider Renis Ali injured on the spot.
Following the accident, agitated locals blocked road, halting vehicular movement for an hour.
In Dhaka, a woman was crushed under the wheels of a speeding bus at Shimultala on Dhaka-Aricha Highway in Savar upazila on Tuesday morning.
The identity of the deceased could not be ascertained immediately.
Sub-inspector of Savar Model Police Station Kamrul Islam said the accident took place when a speeding bus hit the woman while she was crossing Dhaka-Aricha Highway, leaving her injured.
Later, pedestrians whisked her off to Savar Upazila Health Complex where duty doctors declared her dead.
The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy, the SI added.
A case was filed in connection with the incident.
In Sylhet, CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver Alam Ahmed Shwapan, 24, son of late Amir Hossain of Tahirpur upazila of Sumanganj district, was killed and three passengers of his vehicle were injured in an accident at Shibbari Pathanpara in Dakkhin Surma upazila on Tuesday afternoon.
Officer-in-charge of Moglabazar Police Station Khairul Fazal said the fertilizer-laden truck crashed into the auto-rickshaw in the area at about 5:00pm, leaving the driver of the three-wheeler dead and three of its passengers injured.
The injured were rushed to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital, the OC added.
Meanwhile, police seized the killer truck.
