Upaban Express derailment snaps Sylhet’s rail link

Sylhet: Train communication of Sylhet with Dhaka and rest of the country suspended as 11 compartments of Dhaka-bound Upaban Express derailed at Shatgaon station of Moulvibazar in the early hours of Friday.
Bangladesh Railway Sylhet Division assistant engineer Mujibur Rahman on Friday morning told NTV Online around 11 compartments of a Upaban Express train from Srimangal railway station was derailed at Shatgaon railway station as the poling rod of the train broke off at about 1:00am. The compartments stuck into the stony roads and the railway tracks were also damaged due to the derailment. However, no casualties were reported after the accident.
A relief train from Kulaura reached the spot at about 4:00am for rescue operation. On the other hand, another train from Akhaura is on its way for the salvage, said engineer Mujibur Rahman.
The train from Kulaura started rescue operation at about 6:00am. Mujibur Rahman said the railway track has been damaged. It will take a little time to resume the communication.
It has been known that State Minister for Finance and Planning MA Mannan and more than hundred passengers were travelling to Dhaka via the train. The Srimangal Police went to the spot and took the state minister to Shayestaganj. Later, the minister started for Dhaka in his private car, said the Srimangal upazila acting Executive Office (UNO) Mohammad Ashekul Haque.
