4 killed as nor’westers lash Sylhet, Magura and Jessore

At least four people including a child were killed in Sylhet, Magura and Jessore districts while many others were injured as nor’westers lashed over different parts of the country on Friday.

In Sylhet, a woman and a baby died after a nor’wester lashes Usmaninagar upazila in the afternoon.

The female victim died on the spot when she was visiting her relative’s house at Doshal village in the upazila after her throat was slashed by a loose tin from the roof of an under construction building during the storm.

She was identified as Sabina Begum, 45, wife of Khalis Mia of Sonapur village in Balajanj upazila, said Osmaninagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Anisur Rahman.

Besides, sixteen-month-old Hasan Ahmad, son of Sumon Ahmad of Sikandarpur village in Umarpur union, was drowned in the water during the storm that struck the district around 5:00pm, said union parishad member Aklu Mia.

Later, police recovered the body from a pond near his house, said Md Sahid Ulha, officer-in-charge of Osmaninagar Police Station.

Besides, four cows of Yusuf Ali of Purbatila village in Burunga union died by lightning strike and hundreds of trees in different areas of the upazila were uprooted.

Hundreds of tin-shed houses were damaged due to the intensity of the storm.

Over 50 electric poles were uprooted as well as electricity lines were torn keeping the entire upazila in darkness for hours, said Sylhet Palli Bidyut Samity’s Deputy General Manager Zahirul Islam.

In Magura, Akram Hossain Molla, 50, son of Madan Molla of Polita Beroil village in the sadar upazila died on the spot as a lightning struck him during the storm around 5:00pm, said Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abu Sufian.

Ten others were injured as hailstorm swept through the entire upazila, he added.

In Jessore, Laizu Khatun, 19, died from electrocution as a live electric wire fell on her at Prembag in Abhaynagar upazila this evening during a storm, said Syed Sawkat Hossain, member of Prembag Union Parishad.

Two others -Oishee and Fatema- sustained injuries in the incident while they were going to a nearby shop.

Oishee was admitted to Jessore General Hospital while Fatema was sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital for treatment.
