13 killed in accidents across the country
A total of 13 people were killed in separate train crashes and road accidents across the country on Sunday.
In Gazipur: A commuter train derailed in Tongi here on Sunday, leaving four passengers dead and cutting off Dhaka’s rail communications with other parts of the country.
One of the deceased is Shahadat Hossain, 35.
The derailment caused immense sufferings to passengers as a number of trains on different routes got stranded at different stations.
Police of Kamalapur Government Railway Police (GRP) said the Dhaka-bound commuter train from Jamalpur veered off the tracks in the area around 12:45 pm, leaving three of its passengers dead on the spot and 30 others injured.
Seven each of the injured were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and Tongi General Hospital while the rest were given first aid. Among the injured, Shahadat died at the DMCH.
Meanwhile, Railways Minister Mujibul Haque visited the spot.
He told reporters after visiting the spot that the family of the each deceased will be given compensation while the government will ensure proper treatment of the injured,”
Contacted, the minister said that the rail rink would be restored in an hour.
Meanwhile, a three-member investigation committee was formed to probe the train derailment.
Director General of Bangladesh Railway Amzad Hossain said the probe committee, headed by Chandan Kanti Dey, Chief Signal Telecom of Bangladesh Railway, will submit their report within three days.
The other members of the committee are Ariful Islam, (East) Chief engineer, Mizanur Rahman, Chief Technical engineer.
In Kushtia: Two schoolboys were killed as a train hit their motorbike at Chitholia level crossing near Poradaha Railway station in the district on Sunday.
The deceased are Ayatullah, 14, son of Saidul Islam of Ailchara village in sadar upazila and Mubin, 13, son of Saidul Islam of same village. They were students of Aoichara High School.
Shariful Islam, station master of Poradaha railway station, said an engine of a train hit the motorcycle when they were passing the level crossing, leaving Ayatullah dead on spot.
Later, Mubin died on the way to ospital.
In Naogaon: Six people were killed in separate road accidents in Porsha and Potnitala upazilas of the district on Sunday.
Four of deceased are Abdul Salam, 52, Ashraful Islam, 45, Hira Bibi, 60, and Ramjan Ali, 50.
Police superintendent of Naogaon Md Iqbal Hossain said a Porsha-bound bus hit an auto-rickshaw, leaving three people dead on the spot and five others injured at Kusrapara area.
Among the injured, two died on the way to hospital, he said.
Meanwhile, in another accident, Ramjan, a fisherman, died when a fish-laden three-wheeler overturned at Bridgermor area of Potnitala upazila, said officer-in-charge of Potnitala Police Station Mazharul Islam.
The bodies were sent to Naogaon General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
In Manikganj: A young man was killed and eight others injured following a head on a collision between a bus and a human hauler on Dhaka-Aricha highway in Muljan area in sadar upazila on Sunday morning.
The deceased is Mintu Miah, 25, son of Mofidul Islam, resident of Ghior upazila.
Police said the collision took place around 8am when a Dhaka-bound bus of ‘Southern Paribahan’ hit the human hauler (locally named as Leguna), leaving Mintu dead on the spot and eight other human hauler passengers injured.
