Road crashes claim 11 lives in 7 dists

Dhaka: At least 11 people, including two cops, were killed in separate road accidents in Comilla, Narail, Pirojpur, Faridpur, Laxmipur, Dinajpur and Gazipur on Monday.

In Comilla, two people, including a highway police constable, were killed and three others injured as a covered van hit a stationary pickup on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Eliotganj area of Daudkandi upazila in the early hours.

Sergeant Moniruzzaman, in-charge of Eliotganj Highway Police outpost, said the Chittagong-bound covered van crashed into the pickup carrying a patrol team of the highway police in the area at about 5:00am, leaving Rokon Uddin, 27, dead on the spot.

Later, an electric pole-laden lorry hit both the vehicles, which left the helper of the covered van dead on the spot. The incident also left three others, including two police constables injured.

In Narail, a sub-inspector of Boalmari Police Station was killed in a road accident at Bisali area on Narail-Fultola road in Boalmari upazila.

Sub-inspector of Bisali Police Camp Khairul Isalm said a Narail-bound truck from Faridpur smashed the motorcycle of Alek Khan, son of Abdus Sattar Khan of Fultola in Khulna, at about 12:00pm while he was on his way to the police camp from his home, leaving him dead on spot.

In Pirojpur, a speeding bus rammed a running motorcycle at Miruapul on Pirojpur-Najirpur regional highway in Sadar upazila in the morning, killing three bikers and injuring another.

Officer-in charge of Sadar Police Station, Md Enayet Hossain, said motorcyclist Salman, 25, son of Hasan Sheikh of Kaamtola area in the upazila, died instantly while three others were critically injured.  

Locals sent the injured to Sadar Hospital where Rubel, 20, son of Haider Sheikh hailing from Kadamtola, died on the way and Manna, 20, son of Shohag Sheikh died in hospital around 2pm.

In Faridpur, a rickshaw-puller named Ibrahim, 15, son of Rustam Sheikh, was killed when a truck knocked him down in Paschim Khabashpur area of the town.

In Dinajpur, Razib Hasan, 35, son of Golam Mostafa of Sadar upazila, was killed when his motorcycle lost control as one of its wheels got punctured and skidded off the road at Rangamati in Phulbari upazila around 10:30am.

In another incident, Mostafizur Rahman, 37, a clothes trader, was killed when a human hauler plunged into a roadside ditch at Barai Hat in Phulbari upazila in the morning.

In Gazipur, a man was killed as a vehicle ran over him on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Dakkhhin Salna area of the city in the morning.

Bahar Alam, sub-inspector of Nawroj Police outpost, said the vehicle hit Sultan Uddin Mollah, 52, hailing from Charkham area of Kapasia upazila, while he was crossing the highway around 7:30, leaving him dead on the spot.

In Laxmipur, a triangular collision involving a microbus, a leguna and a motorcycle in Koroitala Sawdagar area of Kamalnagar upazila in the evening left a college student, Arman Hossain, dead and 12 people injured.
