10 iftar items seekers killed in Chottgram stampede

Chottogram: At least ten people were killed and fifty others injured in a stampede as thousands of destitute people crowded for receiving iftar items at Satkania upazila in Chottogram, said local public representative.

Chottogram south district additional superintendent of police Mohammad Emran Bhuiyan told NTV Online the accident took place at a field near madrassa at Nolua union of the upazila on Monday morning.

Union Council Chairman Taslima Akhter identities of the deceased could not be known immediately. However, most of them are women.

Kabir Steel Rolling Mill (KSRM), a steel maker company, owner Mohammad Shahjahan said the incident happened while his organisation was distributing iftar item among impoverished people ahead of Ramandan.

KSRM official Mohammad Rafique said the incident occurred as the number of people seeking the goods was beyond expectation. The people did not wait in a queue rather they rushed to collect the iftar items.

Earlier, in 2007, at least six people were killed as mismanagement happened in iftar item distribution by the KSRM Company.
