Banglalink closes offices amid workers agitation
Dhaka: Mobile phone company Banglalink on Sunday shut down all of its offices amid workers agitation over dismissal of a worker and misconduct with another worker for their reported role in a union formation initiative.
The authorities in an email sent to all of the workers said: ‘All Banglalink offices has been closed for today. All of you are requested the leave the office premises immediately and in an organized manner. We regret any inconvenience caused. Regards Management Team.’
When the employees of the mobile company thronged in front of the Gulshan head office for protesting retrenchment of their colleague police obstructed them, said Ujjal Pal, president of Banglalink Employees Association.
At one stage, the officials of Human Resources Department of the company called organising secretary of the association Moshtaque and assaulted him, alleged Ujjal.
Later, the aggrieved staff and employees staged a sit-in in front of the room of Erik Aas, chief executive officer of Banglalink.
Amid the employees’ agitation, the authorities declared all its offices closed for Sunday at about 2:00pm.
RAB, police, private security organisation dog squad have been deployed in front of the Banglalink head office to avert further trouble.
On Thursday, the authorities concerned suspended its one employee, Shariful Islam, senior engineer of the company. Later, the workers confined Chief Technical Officer (CTO) Perihane Elhamy for nine hours to his office, reports United News of Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, the employees withdrew their protest programme following assurance from the higher authorities over considering the retrenchment of engineer Shariful.
