Dhaka: The government has filed an appeal with the Supreme Court seeking a stay order on a High Court verdict that asked it to compensate the family of Jihad who met a tragic death inside a 600-foot abandoned shaft of a water pump at Shahjahanpur Railway Colony in 2014.

Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice Hasan Foez Siddique on Sunday fixed Tuesday for hearing the appeal, said Additional Attorney General Momtaz Uddin Fakir.

Earlier on 18 February, an HC bench comprising Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Kazi M Ejarul Haque Akond asked the government to compensate the family members of the four-year-old boy.

However, the court did not mention the amount of compensation to be paid and the authorities concerned responsible for paying it.

Children Charity Bangladesh Foundation Chairman Barrister Abdul Halim filed a writ petition with the High Court on 28 December 2014 seeking its directives for providing Tk 30 lakh as compensation to Jihad’s family members.

On 15 February 2015, the court issued a rule asking the government to explain why it should not be asked to pay the money as compensation.

The body of Jihad was pulled out from the abandoned shaft 23 hours after he had slipped into it on 27 December 2014.
