Within a few weeks of enforcement of a new Transport Act to bring discipline on roads and highways, a fatal road crash in Sologhar area of Sreenagar upazila here claimed lives of eight people on Friday.

The deceased included two children and two women but their identities could not be known yet.

Asaduzzaman, additional police superintendent, Sreenagar Circle, said the Mawa-bound passenger bus of Swadhin Paribahancollided with the Dhaka-bound microbus in the area around 2pm, leaving all the eight microbus passengers dead on the spot.

Hedayetul Islam Bhuiyan, officer-in-charge of Sreenagar Police Station, said the microbus was carrying a bridal party to Kamrangirchar in Keraniganj from Konkoshar in Louhajang upazila.

All the bodies were kept at Sreenagar Upazila Health Complex, the OC said.

The road crash took place after the Road Transport Act came into effect on November 1. The Road Transport Bill 2018 was passed by parliament on September 19, 2018.

This law has a provision of maximum five years’ jail for any death or serious injuries caused by reckless or negligent driving.
