Road crashes kill 6 in three districts
Dhaka: Six people, including an elderly woman, were killed and five others injured in separate road accidents in Comilla, Cox’s Bazar and Habiganj districts on Friday.
In Comilla, a truck driver and a helper were killed as the gas cylinder of their vehicle went off at Kutumbapur on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Chandina upazila on Friday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Sohel, 65, a resident of Sayedpur village, and Palash, 28, of Dharmapur village in Adarsha Sadar upazila of the district.
In-charge of Iliatganj Highway Police Camp sub-inspector Quazi Maniruzzaman said the truck, loaded with sand, was going to Comilla.
When the vehicle reached Kutumbapur, one of its front wheels deflated and the driver lost his control over the steering.
As a result, the truck hit a covered van and suddenly the gas cylinder of the vehicle blasted on the aftermath around 3:00pm, leaving the driver and the helper dead on the spot.
Later, police recovered the bodies and sent those to hospital for autopsy.
In Cox’s Bazar, two people were killed and five others were injured in a head-on collision between a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and a truck at Chaillatali Bazar on Gorakghata-Kalamarchara road in Maheshkhali upazila on Friday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Nur Mohammad, 35, son of Mohammed Islam of Hoanak, and Nurul Alam, 32, son of Mohammad Ali of Adharghona village.
Officer-in-charge of Maheshkhali Police Station Babul Chandra Banik said the accident took place when a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and a goods-laden truck collided head-on around 3:00pm, leaving two passengers of the auto dead and five others injured.
Three of the injured were taken to Maheshkhali Upazila Health Complex, the OC added.
In Habiganj, a bus driver and his assistant were killed and 10 others injured in a head-on collision between two buses in Karanji Bridge area of Bahubal upazila on Friday.
Mosharraf Hossain, officer-in-charge of Bahubal Police Station, said the accident took place in the area around 7:30am when a Sylhet-bound ‘Boisakhi Paribahan’ bus from Dhaka collided head-on with a local bus, leaving the local bus driver and helper killed on the spot.
Of the injured, two were rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
On information, police sent the bodies to local hospital morgue for autopsy.
