Man killed for protesting women harassment
Bogra: A young man was killed as he protested harassment of women in his village at Shajahanpur in Bogra on Saturday night.
The deceased is Shanatan Chandra Modok, believed to be in his late twenty, was married a month back. He was also a resident of Hindupara in the upazila.
Police held two for their alleged connection with the killing.
The police said a gang of local young men harassed women while they were going to join at Haribashar, a religious programme of Hindus, at about 11:00pm on Saturday.
The stalkers beat a young man called Ratan after he stood up against them.
The miscreants stabbed Shanatan, brother-in-law of Ratan, who went to the spot to rescue him.
Later, local people rescued Shanatan, and took him to Bogra Shahid Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The Hindus of the village became agitated following the murder. They brought out a procession carrying the body of Shanatan in front of the medical premises.
The local people also tried to block Dhaka-Bogra Highway, but police brought the situation under control.
The Hindu leaders demanded exemplary punishment of the killers. They claimed authorities failed to provide security to the Hindus during their religious festival.
However, the Shajahanpur police officer-in-charge Alamgir Hossain claimed his force is trying to provide with safety to the Hindus.
