Sunamganj: Two minor schoolgirls drowned in a pond at Gobindapur village in Dirai upazila on Thursday, reported UNB.

The deceased were identified as Safia Begum, 7, daughter of Shamsul Haque, and her cousin (daughter of paternal uncle) Liza Begum, 8, daughter of Abdul Haque of the village. They were class II and III students of a local government primary school respectively.

Officer-in-charge of Dirai Police M Anisur Rahman said Safia drowned in the pond while taking bath at noon.

Liza also drowned in the water when she tried to save Safia.

Later, local people recovered their bodies from the pond.
