AL leader held over seven-murder

Narayanganj: Detectives on Friday arrested a local Awami League leader in Narayanganj in connection with the sensational seven murders.
The arrestee was identified as Abul Bashar, assistant publicity secretary of Siddhirganj thana unit of Awami League and an aide of Nur Hossain, the prime accused in the seven-murder cases.
A team of Detective Branch of police arrested Bashar from Dakkhin Golakanda area in Rupganj upazila of the district at noon, said officer-in-charge of district DB Inspector Mamunur Rashid Mondal, also the investigation officer of the cases.
On 27 April last year, Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam, his three associates and driver were abducted by miscreants from Fatullah area of the city. At the same time, senior lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarker and his driver were also abducted on their way to capital Dhaka.
Three days into their abduction, the bodies of six people, including that of Nazrul and Chandan Kumar, were recovered from the Shitalakhya River on 30 April. The body of Jahangir, car driver of Nazrul Islam, was recovered from the river the following day.
