5 dead in ferry-steamer collision in river Kirtankhola
Barisal: At least five people were killed and 10 others injured in a collision between a passenger ferry and a steamer in the River Kirtankhola at Charbaria in Sadar upazila early on Monday.
The deceased could not yet be identified.
BIWTA (Security and Traffic) Deputy Director Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman said the accident took place when the Dhaka-bound ferry Surovi-7 collided with Barisal-bound BIWTC steamer PS Masud in the river at about 4.50am, leaving the five passengers of steamer dead on the spot and a number of passengers trapped in the steamer.
Ten passengers were also injured in the incident.
Seven firefighting units from Barisal fire service are continuing their rescue operation.
