Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Monday alleged that the ruling party is tagging various conditions as it is not sincere to forge a national unity to tackle the growing militancy and terrorism.

‘Now the country is in a crisis. Had the they (AL) been sincere to face militancy and terrorism, they wouldn’t have given any condition for forging a unity at this bad time,’ BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told reporters at Banani Army Stadium after paying homage to those killed in Gulshan café terror attack.

He made the remarks as journalists sought his reaction to Awami League joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif’s comment that there can be no talks and unity with BNP unless it sever ties with Jamaat.

Under the country’s current situation, Fakhrul said all will have to get united rising above past bitterness and rivalry.

‘Our chairperson yesterday (Sunday) called for a national unity forgetting all divisions to face the country’s serious crisis. We, on behalf of our party, came here today to pay our tribute to those killed in the terror attack,’ he added.

On Sunday, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at a press conference strongly denounced the Gulshan terror attack and called upon all, irrespective of party and opinion, for forging unity against terrorism without further delay.

In response to her call, Hanif turned down the BNP chief’s call for unity saying there can be no unity with BNP if it does not abandons Jamaat and regret for its previous mistakes.

At least 28 people, including 20 foreigners and Bangladeshis, six attackers and two senior police officials were killed as terrorists attacked Holey Artisan Bakery restaurant in the city's Gulshan diplomatic zone on Friday night.

A BNP delegation, led by Fakhrul, went to the Army Stadium at about 10:30am to pay their tributes to the terrorist attack victims.

The other BNP delegation members include party vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman, senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and joint secretary general Mahbubuddin Khokan.
