Rangpur: A minor girl was killed and 16 passengers were injured in a road accident at Chakai Jadur Mour point on the Dhaka-Panchagarh highway under Birganj upazila in Dinajpur on Friday, police sources said.

The deceased was identified as Rupa, 5, daughter of Mohammad Rabi of Mukundupur village under nearby Kaharol upazila in the district.

The accident occurred when a Panchagarh-bound bus from Dhaka was overturned in the area after the driver lost control over steering amid inclement weather at 8.30 am.

Another unidentified night coach immediately hit the Panchagarh-bound bus from behind when the ill-fated coach fell down into the roadside ditch injuring its 16 passengers.

While fleeing away the scene, the unidentified coach crushed Rupa, who was standing in the nearby area, killing her on the spot.

The injured passengers were rushed to Birganj Upazila Health Complex from where three critically injured were shifted to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital.

Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) of Birganj police station Fakhrul Islam informed local reporters that body of the deceased girl was handed over to her relatives.

A case was filed in this connection.
