Univs to stand by govt in combatting extremism

Dhaka: Vice-chancellors of public universities on Monday declared that the university authorities will extend all assistance to the government to eliminate militancy and extremism from the country.
The assurance was offered at an exchange of views public university vice-chancellors on current law and order situation and other issues related to universities in the University Grants Commission (UGC) auditorium in Dhaka.
UGC chairman Abdul Mannan presided over the meeting, a press release said.
The meeting began with the observance of one minute silence to pay homage to the victims of the terrorist attacks on the Holey Artisan Bakery and Sholakia Eid Congregation in Kishoreganj.
Vice-chancellors asked UGC to play pro-active role in solving the various problems of the universities and sought cooperation and assistance of the government about the overall security of the universities.
UGC chairman requested the vice-chancellors to closely monitor militant activities and curb extremism at universities.
