Dhaka: The National Committee to Protect Oil-Gas-Natural Resources and Power-Port staged demonstrations across the country on Monday to press home its seven-point demand, including cancellation of the Rampal coal-fired power plant project.

In the capital, a rally was held in front of the Jatiya Press Club in the afternoon when speakers demanded that all the projects that are destructive to the Sundarbans be scrapped.

Meanwhile, the national committee will arrange road marches and cultural rallies throughout the country on July 19-26 to press for its demands.

Besides, the committee members will move in a procession towards the Prime Minister’s Office from the Jatiya Press Club at 11 am on July 28.

Earlier on July 16, the National Committee to Protect Oil-Gas-Natural Resources and Power-Port announced fresh programmes in protest against the signing of a contract for implementing the Rampal power plant project near the Sundarbans.

Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company Ltd (BIFPCL), a joint venture company formed by Dhaka and New Delhi, signed the contract on July 12 with Indian contractor BHEL to install the plant.
