Dhaka: Seven children, including two pairs of siblings, have met their watery burial in four separate incidents in Lalmonirhat, Dhaka and Chittagong districts.

In Chittagong, two siblings—Asma, 11, and Tanjila, 9, daughters of Kabir Ahmed of Purba Ratanpur village in Fatikchhari upazila—drowned in a pond adjacent to their house on Monday afternoon.

Later, locals found them floating in the pond around 3:30 pm and whisked them off to a hospital where duty doctors declared the duo dead.

In another incident, Khorshed Alam, 3, son of M Rashed, a resident of West Gongdandi village in Boalkhali upazila, drowned in a pond in the afternoon.

Family members said Khorshed was playing at a field near their house in the afternoon when he fell into the pond.

In Dhaka, a minor boy and a minor girl drowned in a pond at Duttapara village of Savar upazila on Monday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Safina, 4, daughter of Sattar Munshi, and Raful, 4, son of M Rana, residents of the village.

Locals said Safina and Raful were playing in the village in the afternoon. At one stage, the two kids drowned in an adjacent pond.

Later, family members recovered their bodies from the pond after a frantic search.

In Lalmonirhat, two siblings drowned in a pond at West Bejgram village in Hatibandha upazila on Sunday.

The deceased were identified as Hira Moni, 10, and Himu Moni, 5, daughters of Habibur Rahman of Fatikchhari village in the upazila.

Officer-in-charge of Hatibandha Police Station Rezaul Karim said Hira and Himu went to their maternal grandfather’s house on Sunday.

In the evening, the two sisters went missing, he added.

On Monday morning, locals spotted the bodies floating in a pond adjacent to the house.

A pall of gloom descended on the area following the incident.
