UNHCR to continue work with Bangladesh for durable solution to refugee issue
Dhaka: Newly appointed Country Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Shinji Kubo on Wednesday assured that the UNHCR will continue to work with the government of Bangladesh to find a durable solution to refugee issue.
He thanked Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali for accepting his credential, and acknowledged the government efforts in dealing with a large number of refugees, reports UNB.
The Foreign Minister, accepting to Kubo’s credentials, expressed deep appreciation of the government to the UNHCR for its continued support to Myanmar refugees living in Bangladesh.
The Foreign Minister said the government would continue dialogue with the UNHCR to ensure sustained protection and assistance for the registered Myanmar refugees, pending their return.
Minister Ali appreciated the positive momentum generated by the recent change in the leadership of Myanmar and mentioned the recent visit of Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque to Myanmar as a goodwill envoy.
During the meeting, the Foreign Minister stressed that voluntary repatriation of Myanmar refugees back to their homes in the Rakhine State of Myanmar is a durable solution to the protracted refugee situation in the country.
