Children of workers to get stipends for outstanding public exam results

Dhaka: The government has taken a decision to provide stipends to workers’ children who will cut outstanding figures in public exams of both formal and informal sectors.
State Minister for Labour and Employment Mujibul Haque disclosed this to reporters during a programme arranged for Lafarge Surma Cement Ltd. to donate a portion of their profits to the government-administered Workers Welfare Trust Fund, reported UNB.
The state minister said workers’ children who acquired GPA5 in SSC and HSC examinations in the last two years (2015 and 2016 session) have been asked to apply for educational aid by August 30. Following scrutiny of their applications, worthy candidates will be given a one-off payment of TK 25,000 by September.
Additionally, upto Tk 3 lakh each will be distributed among the students who gain entry into Public University, Medical, Agriculture and Engineering College/University from the fund, said Mujibul Haque.
At present the total accumulated amount of the trust is around TK 171 crore. Some 71 national and multinational companies have been depositing a part of their profits towards the fund, the minister added.
A three member delegation of Lafarge Surma led by CEO Niraj Akhouri distributed TK 102, 61750 (1 crore 2 lakh 61, 750) to the fund.
