PM to open Mawna flyover today

Gazipur: The public sufferings at Mawna point on Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway are going to be over as the newly-constructed Mawna Flyover opens to traffic on Saturday.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to open the much-awaited 450-metre flyover at about 4:20pm by unveiling its plaque. She will later join a civic rally there.
Meanwhile, Road Transport and Bridges minister Obaidul Quader told reporters on Friday that Bangladesh Army has finished the work of the flyover three months before the stipulated time.
‘Bangladesh Army has kept its commitment by completing the flyover three months before the set time,’ he said after visiting the flyover.
Noting that such kind of flyover is the first outside Dhaka and Chittagong, the minister informed that more such flyovers would be constructed on other highways of the country to ease public sufferings.
Construction firm Abdul Monem Limited has constructed the flyover under the supervision of the 17 UCB of Bangladesh Army. The work of the flyover with 450-metre approach road was completed in about two years at a cost of Tk 70 crore. It is situated at Mawna Chowrasta under Sreepur upazila, 60 kilometres off the capital.
The government has so far spent Tk 992.10 crore for the ongoing project for upgrading the 87.18 km road to four lanes up to Mawna under Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway. ‘Over 90% work of the project has been completed,’ Quader said and hoped the work of the project would be finished within next month.
Liberation War Affairs minister AKM Mozammel Haque, Gazipur deputy commissioner Md Nurul Islam, local Awami League leaders as well as senior officials of Bangladesh Army and Road Transport and Bridges Division were with the minister.
