Rajshahi: A couple were killed while asleep after a bus crashed into their house in Baharampur rail crossing area of Rajshahi in the early hours of Wednesday.

The deceased are Bashir Uddin, in his forties, and his wife Reshma Begum, around 35 years old.

Fortunately, the couple’s sons, Rahat, around 5 years, and Alife, believed to be 7 years, who were also sleeping with their parents, escaped the accident.

Around 15 other people were also injured during the accident. The injured are Dipu Miah, railway gateman, and his wife Champa Khatun, Manik and Jakir, neighbours of the deceased,  Mamun, Hridoy, Mamun, Firoz, Rojob, Sharif, Manik, Emdadul, and Uttam, passengers of the bus.

The injured were taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospita. Two of the injured are in critical condition.

The Rajpara Police Officer-in-charge Aman Ullah said the accident occurred when a Dhaka-bound Keya Paribahan bus from Chapainawabganj ploughed through a roadside house in Baharampur rail crossing area in Rajshahi as its driver lost control over the steering at about 1:30am, leaving the couple dead on the spot and fifteen other people injured.

A team of fire fighters recovered the injured and sent them to hospital while the bodies were sent to morgue.

However, agitated local people blocked the Rajshahi-Chapainawabganj Highway protesting the death of the couple at about 7:00am. Later, police drove the protestors away from the road.

Police seized the bus while the bus driver fled from the spot.
