Dhaka: At least 677 people were killed in 896 road accidents in Dhaka and Chittagong cities in last year.
Besides, 172 other people became victims of fatal injuries in the incidents of the two major cities of the country in between 1 January to 31 December in 2014, according to the road accident monitoring cell of Bangladesh Jatri Kallyan Samity (BJKS).
BJKS, a non-government organisation, compiled the statistics from reported information of mass media of the country.
According to the statistics, 560 people were killed in 603 accidents in Dhaka city, while 117 were killed in 293 accidents in port city Chittagong during the period.
The BJKS report said pedestrians of the two cities are bound to walk on the streets as 85 percent of footpaths are occupied by the walkway hawkers and shopkeepers as well as illegal parking.
The report also said that 59 percent of victims were killed after being run over by vehicles, 19 percent during getting into or down from the vehicles, and seven percent each due to competition of the automobiles and conversation over mobile phones during crossing road.
The BJKS have given eight point recommendations to reduce road accidents in Dhaka and Chittagong cities, including banning of getting down and in from running vehicles as well as crossing, eviction of footpath grabbers, separate lanes from motorized and non-motorized vehicles and strictly restricted for road side parking.
