At least five people were killed when a pick-up van rammed a stationary bus from behind in Mirsarai upazila of Chittagong on early Saturday, police said.

Mirsarai Police Station Officer-in-charge (OC) Imtiaz Bhuiyan said the accident took place at about 5:30am on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in Khuiyachara area of the upazila.

The Chittagong-bound pick-up van hit the bus of Shyamali Paribahan, which was parked in the area as it went out of order, the OC said.  

Four people, including driver’s assistant of the van, supervisor of the bus, and a woman, were killed on the spot, while another injured passenger died on his way to the hospital, the OC said.

On information, the highway police recovered the bodies and sent those to local hospital morgue.

The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

The pick-up overturned but its driver managed to flee the scene, said the police official.
