Sugar mill workers go on strike in Gaibandha
Gaibandha: Workers of state-run Rangpur Suger Mills and the sugarcane farmers in the mill zone on Saturday morning went on a strike demanding to recover the land of the mill from illegal occupation.
The workers in association with the farmers took position at Mahimaganj Railway Station in Gobindaganj upazila of Gaibandha and blocked the rail tracks at about 8:30am, halting the train communication between Rangpur and Dhaka.
Abdul Matin, president of Rangpur Sugar Mills Workers Union, said a group of local people grabbed some 500 acres of lands of the sugar mill illegally three months back.
As a result, the production of sugarcane as well as sugar has been hampered, he added.
