Dhaka: Amid fear that there is a possibility of traffic collapse on Saturday and Sunday due to the restriction on vehicular movement on major roads for Awami League’s national council, police authorities said they will ensure smooth traffic.

Talking to journalists after inspecting security arrangement of Suhrawardy Udyan on Friday evening, Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque ruled out the possibility of any public sufferings due to the Awami League council, reports UNB.

The IGP said vehicular movement will be controlled on some particular roads for some times, but it will not cause any public sufferings and traffic disruption.

The two-day council of the ruling party begins on Saturday at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan.

Sources at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police said they will not allow any vehicle on different roads near Shahbagh, Nilkhet, Doyel Chattar and Matsya Bhaban areas for ensuring security for the Awami League council.

Besides, the VIP roads like Jahangir Gate to Shahbagh via Bijoy Sharani and Sonargaon intersection will be kept shut from 8:00am as the Prime Minister will join the council in the morning.

They said traffic movement on the VIP Road is expected to be normal once the Prime Minister reaches the council venue.

However, the roads around Suhrawardy Udyan may witnesses sever traffic disruption as the ruling party men will join the council in small processions while and party delegates and guests will park their vehicles in the areas, a DMP official said seeking to remain anonymous.

Besides, several thousand students, who are going to sit for Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) admission test on Saturday morning, may endure sufferings due to traffic restriction on different roads.
