Police said two people were killed, and eight others were missing after a bus plunged into a roadside ditch in Kalkini upazila of Madaripur on early Saturday. At least 20 passengers were hurt in the accident.    

The accident occurred at about 4:30am on Dhaka-Barisal Highway at Pantapara of Dasar in the upazila.

The identities of the deceased could not be confirmed. They were admitted into Madaripur Sadar Hospital.

Dasar Police Officer-in-charge (OC) Emdadul Haq said a Barisal-bound Eagle Paribahan bus fell into a roadside ditch when it was crossing Pantapara area as the driver lost control over the steering. The locals rescued 20 people alive from the water. Later, the fire service team rescued two dead bodies at about 9:00am. Eight more passengers are still missing.   

A team of divers from Barisal joined the fire service team to rescue the missing people. The Highway Police were trying to pull up the bus from water.
