Dhaka: Member secretary of the National Committee to Protect Oil-Gas, Natural Resources and Power-Port Anu Muhammad on Monday claimed that some 20-35 lakh people will become refugees in the country’s coastal belt near the Sundarbans if the Rampal coal-fired power plant is implemented.

He made the claim while addressing a rally at Shahbagh in the city.

The city unit of the National Committee organised the rally to drum up support for the committee’s planned ‘March towards Dhaka’ scheduled for November 24-26 culminating at the Central Shaheed Minar in protest against the Rampal power plant.

Anu Muhammad said the government has been engaged in grabbing people’s land in the name of different development projects. 

Alleging that the government continues its misleading campaign in favour of the Rampal power plant, he, however, said people are united to resist the ‘anti-nation’ project. 

National Committee leaders Saiful Haque, Zonaid Saki, Manosh Nandi and Sikander Hayat also addressed the rally.

They urged people to join the planned ‘March towards Dhaka’ programme defying all barriers.
