Dhaka: Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) on Wednesday called on the government to play a vigorous role in the global arena to realise climate compensation funds committed by developed countries instead of seeking loans.

TIB Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman made the call at a press conference at TIB Dhanmondi office in Dhaka following COP 22 conference in Morocco, said a press release.

Referring to possible challenges to get assistance from different global climate funds, he urged the development partners to pay their committed amounts to the locally financed trust funds in Bangladesh.

The press conference was told that allocation for Bangladesh Climate Change Trust Fund is declining in national budget every year. Besides, the industrial countries did not give new funds for Bangladesh Climate Change Resilience Fund after 2012.

Dr. Iftekharuzzaman expressed concerns over the recent news of withdrawal of British fund for Bangladesh Climate Change Resilience Fund.

He suggested the government defy the pressure of World Bank, IMF and other global lending agencies and try to realize grants meant for legitimate compensation for Bangladesh.

He also suggested ensuring transparency, accountability and participation of citizens in the implementation of projects financed by the climate funds.
