Dhaka: The National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports starts its "March Towards Dhaka" programme on Thursday morning from 7 divisional headquarters - Chittagong, Khulna, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Sylhet, Barisal and Mymensingh - demanding cancellation of the Rampal Power Plant, which is now being built jointly by Dhaka and New Delhi near Sundarbans.

After a two-day march, the activists of the National Committee will reach Dhaka on Saturday and hold a grand rally at the Central Shahid Minar in the city.

On their way to Dhaka the committee activists will hold rallies at different districts from where other activists will join the March, National Committee leader Ruhin Hossain Prince told UNB.

He said the committee leaders are expecting a big group will join the march on their way towards Dhaka from different districts which will be crossed during the three-day march from November 24-26.

The National Committee announced the March Towards Dhaka programme from a sit-in on August 20 in front of the Central Shaheed Minar.

The committee's Member Secretary Prof Anu Muhammad announced the programme styled "Cholo, Cholo Dhaka Cholo" (March to Dhaka) at the daylong sit-in programme.

In the last three months, the committee has been running a campaign urging people to join the programme to raise their voice to cancel the Rampal power plant and protect the Sundarbans.
