Gazipur boat capsize death toll rises to 5

The death toll from Friday’s boat capsize in the Shitalakhaya River in Kapasia upazila rose to five with the recovery of three more bodies from the river on early Saturday.

The deceased are identified as Tajim Khan, 14, son of Noni Khan, a resident of Paratola area, Atik, 26, son of Abdul Hye Babul, a resident of Madhyanagar area, Kohinur Begum, 25, wife of Nur Mohammad, a resident of Alinagar village, Md kaiyum, 17, son of Tara Miah, a resident of Talajhula village, and Anu Miah, son of Hasan Ali, a resident of Lakhpur village in Shibganj upazila of Narsingdi district.

Kapasia Police Station sub-inspector Dulal Miah said the Taraganj bound-boat from Shibpur of Narsingdi district sank in the river near Taraganj Bazar at about 6:30pm due to overloading, reports UNB.

All the passengers, except 10-12, managed to swim ashore.

On information, police went to the spot recovered the bodies of Atik, Tajim and Kohinur at night.

Later, a team of divers from Tongi and Dhaka fire stations started a rescue operation around 11.30am on Saturday.

The team retrieved two more bodies after 12 midnight and called off their operation at about 1:30am.
