Dhaka: Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) General Secretary Comrade Syed Abu Zafar Ahmed on Sunday demanded rehabilitation of hawkers before their eviction.

The CPB general secretary spoke at a views-exchange meeting with Hawkers Somonnoy Parishad at CPB office, said Press release of CPB.

He said that the decision of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) to evict the hawkers forcefully is not acceptable, without a plan to rehabilitate them.

Both city mayors need to sit with the people and devise what would be their best alternative for all stakeholders before going for eviction, it was felt.

Expressing his unity with the hawkers, Syed Abu Zafar Ahmed also urged the hawkers to continue their movement resolutely. The leaders of the parishad and hawkers’ union also made similar demands.

Sekandar Hayat, advisor of the union presented his written speech at the meeting.

On January 15, DSCC mayor Syeed Khokon started the evacuation of the illegal hawker stations in Gulistan area as per the previous announcement.

The magistrates evacuated hawkers in Baytul Mokarram, Doinik Bangla intersection, Dilkusha and Paltan areas.
