Sheikh Hasina talks tough against arms brandishing on campuses
Dhaka: Awami League president Sheikh Hasina, also the prime minister, on Tuesday said she does not want to hear the rattles of arms anymore on campuses as the government has given the utmost importance to maintaining congenial atmosphere in educational institutions.
"I’ll tell Chhatra League we don't want to see the rattles of weapons in any educational institution, we don't want to see such incidents anymore, this is how there had been enormous losses," she said.
Sheikh Hasina was speaking at a views-exchange meeting with leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) who came from across the country who met her at her official residence Ganobhaban.
Due to session jams, she said, students have to wait years after years to appear in their examinations. "Due to the waiting, the students couldn’t get jobs after coming out from educational institutions," she said.
Sheikh Hasina, also the lifetime member of the BCL, said the government has succeeded in abolishing the session jam in educational institutions. "It’s the prime task of the students to put attention to their academic activities."
She also asked the BCL leaders to keep vigil to maintain equilibrium between politics and study in the educational institutions. "You’re doing politics, you are leading…make sure everyone pays proper attention."
Giving importance to study, the Prime Minister said all have to acquire knowledge as the world is turning more and more competitive day by day. "You’ll have to pay proper attention to the study to transform yourselves as the country’s worthy citizens to be able to compete in the world arena," she said.
Putting emphasis on creating awareness against terrorism, militancy and drug addiction in their respective areas the Prime Minister directed the BCL leaders to be vocal and active against such social menaces that can damage life of the youths.
The Prime Minister also described indiscriminate torching, vandalism and rampage carried out by the BNP-Jamaat nexus from 2013 to first quarter of 2015 and said, BNP leader wanted to unseat the government which people resisted.
Sheikh Hasina hoped that the BNP and its leadership would not do it again in future as people would certainly forge resistance against such misdeeds.
Terming the people of the country as the main power, the Prime Minister urged Chhatra League leaders to go to grassroots and highlight her government's welfare-oriented various success stories before common people.
She suggested the leaders of the student organisation to plant saplings in their institutions and help protect all properties there as these are the national wealth.
The Prime Minister also mentioned the issue of Padma Bridge construction work and said the World Bank raised a false allegation of corruption which it could not prove. Rather, they were compelled to speak the truth that the only family in the world she belongs never indulges in any corruption, the Prime Minister added.
As a result, she said, self confidence of her government has further strengthened for which it can speak keeping head high saying honesty is the main power.
The Prime Minister advised the leaders of Chhatra League to attain higher education to build themselves as qualified citizens as well as visit Bangabandhu Memorial Museum and Parliament Sessions to learn more lessons and history of the nation.
Sheikh Hasina said Chhatra League has a glorious history and its leaders and members played pivotal role in every achievement of the country starting from the Language Movement to the Liberation War and all democratic movements, she said.
BCL president M Saifur Rahman Sohag and general secretary SM Jakir Hossain were present on the occasion.
