Strike on Rajshahi, Rangpur divs lifted
Bangladesh Road Transport Workers’ Federation on Sunday called off the strike it had imposed on Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions in protest at the arrest of several workers.
The federation’s Rajshahi division president Abdul Latif Mandal said, ‘The state minister of Home Affairs, Asaduzzaman Khan, requested us to postpone the strike and asked us to meet him in his secretariat office at 3:00pm on Monday. For this reason, we decided to end our strike. We will announce next programme following the meeting with the minister.’
He at a press briefing at the Bogra Press Club at about 6:00pm announced the withdrawal of the strike.
He at the briefing placed several demands that include immediate arrest of the offenders who attacked the Shah Ali bus in Dhaka, release of several drivers and their assistants, and punitive action against the attackers.
Latif Mandal complained that Bangladesh Chhatra League students beat up Shah Fate Ali bus conductor and vandalised the bus on 13 May; police arrested a truck driver and his assistant on 14 May over a robbery on the truck and police on 18 May arrested and reportedly tortured a bus driver and helper in connection with a bus robbery.
He said all the allegations against the workers are fabricated and baseless.
