Cox’s Bazar: US Ambassador in Dhaka Marcia Bernicat said here on Tuesday that their government will continue to put pressure on Myanmar as solution to Rohingya problems is in Myanmar’s hands.

“Rohingya people have come to Bangladesh from Myanmar. Their roots are in Myanmar. So, the solution to their problems is in Myanmar,” she said while talking to reporters after visiting an unregistered Rohingya camp at Leda in Teknaf upazila.

The US envoy said they will continue to work in resolving the problems of Rohingyas who fled their homeland amid persecution.

Bernicat said she enquired the men and women who took shelter in Bangladesh from Myanmar.

Over 65,000 Myanmar nationals entered Bangladesh since October 9 last year. Meanwhile, more than 30,000 registered Rohingyas are living in two camps in Cox’s Bazar district, while about five lakh undocumented Rohingyas are living here.

Earlier, Bernicat reached the Rohingya camp at Leda around 10am and talked to the new arrivals and saw the situation on the ground.

She also held a meeting with the employees of a health clinic of International Organization for Migration (IOM) there and visited a slum.

Commanding officer of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Commander Lt Col Abu Jar al Zahid and IOM officials were, among others, present.
