Dhaka: Claiming that party leader Salahuddin Ahmed gave no interview to any media, Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Monday said media ran fabricated news quoting him.

In a statement, BNP spokesman Asaduzzaman Ripon said, ‘It has come to our notice that different media ran fabricated stories quoting BNP joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed in recent times. His (Salahuddin’s) family members informed us that confusion may arise for this.’

‘Salahuddin’s wife Hasina Ahmed who is now staying in Shillong informed us that as per the law, a treatment receiver has no minimum scope for giving interview to any media at North Easter Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Science (NEIGRIHMS) in India,’ Ripon said.

Salahuddin just answered few questions from local and international media while being shifted to the hospital, which was aired by various television channels, he quoted Hasina Ahmed as saying.

‘She (Hasina Ahmed) confirmed the party (BNP) that her husband gave no interview to any foreign media. But some media published fabricated personal interview in the name of Salahuddin Ahmed, which has no minimum relation to reality,’ the BNP spokesman added.

BNP expects that media will not publish or air fabricated news quoting Salahuddin Ahmed to avoid confusion. ‘All are requested to contact with Salahuddin’s family in this regard,’ he said.

Meghalaya police arrested BNP joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed on 11 May as he was hanging around aimlessly in Golf Links area of Shillong after nearly two months of his disappearance. Since he had no valid papers, identity proof or travel permit, he was arrested by Meghalaya police and booked under the Foreigners Act.

BNP and Salahuddin's family members had been claiming that law enforcers picked him up from a house at Uttara on the night of 10 March, an allegation denied by the law enforcers and the government.
