Public opinion reflected on new EC, not PM’s: Quader
Dhaka: Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader on Wednesday said public opinion, not the Prime Minister's choice, has been reflected on the new the Election Commission (EC) formation.
'The public opinion has been reflected on Election Commission... BNP will surely join the next election under the new EC,' he said.
The Awami League leader made the comment as journalists drew his attention to BNP's allegation that the Prime Minister's liking has been reflected on the new EC.
Talking to reporters after attending the signing ceremony of the 3rd Shitalkhya Bridge construction at a city hotel, Quader also said the worth of the EC will be proved with its activities.
He also claimed that the EC has already been accepted by civil society members.
President Abdul Hamid on Monday night constituted the new EC making former secretary KM Nurul Huda as the CEC and four other commissioners.
The four new election commissioners are former additional secretary Mahbub Talukder, ex-secretary Rafiqul Islam, ex-district and session's judge Begum Kabita Khanam and Brig Gen (retd) Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury.
Criticising BNP for opposing the EC, Quader, also the Road Transport and Bridges Minister, said the President did not take any unilateral decision regarding the EC.
'Discussions with different political parties were held and then a search committee was formed which talked to the country's noted citizens to make the process flawless. After all this, I think there should not be any confusion about it,' he observed.
Quader warned that if BNP does not participate in the next polls creating unnecessary controversy over the EC, the party's organisational capacity will be weaken further.
