BNP accuses govt of conspiring to hold lopsided polls again

Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) senior leader Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury on Friday alleged that the government is conspiring again to hold lopsided polls keeping people out of the election process.

Speaking at a discussion, he also said the country’s people have lost their confidence in the current election system as the government has destroyed it by resorting to manipulation, irregularities and muscle power.

He urged all to get united to get rid of it and restore a healthy election system.

Jatiyatabadi Sangskritik Dal arranged the programme at the Jatiya Press Club, marking its 11th founding anniversary.

Khasru, a BNP standing committee member, said their party is not worried over the cancellation of its registration with the Election Commission if it boycotts the next election. “There’re a lot of discussions whether BNP will join the next polls and what will be consequence if it boycotts it.”

“We’re not afraid of losing our party registration. Those who believe that it’ll be possible to take BNP to election by scaring it with the threat of scrapping its registration are in fact living in fool’s paradise.” he observed.

The BNP leader said their party will surely join the polls if it is held in a fair and credible manner under a polls-time neutral government.

He said their party chief Khaleda Zia will soon place a proposal on the frame work of the election-time supportive government.

Khasru called upon the government to take steps for introducing an effective and credible election system in the country through a political consensus to restore public confidence in it and hold fair and neutral polls.
