Dhaka: Describing militancy as a national problem, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Tuesday again urged the government to face the menace nationally shunning the politics of blame game.
In a statement, she also urged the country's people to get united to resolve the problem.
"Like the country's people, I'm also deeply anxious and worried at the rise of terrorist activities being carried out in the name of religious militancy in different areas, including Sylhet, Dhaka, Chittagong and Comilla," the BNP chief said.
She congratulated the defence forces, including Para Commandos of Bangladesh Army, for conducting successful operation at a residential building in Sylhet to neutralise terrorists.
Khaleda Zia expressed shock at the casualties in the Sylhet operation and conveyed her sympathy to the injured victims.
She said it will not be possible to eliminate militancy by only conducting crackdowns. "There's no scope of complacency with success in one or two operations."
The BNP chief said the absence of democracy, the rule of law and justice, and corruption and high unemployment rate among youths are the main reasons behind the rise in militancy in the Muslim-majority country. "Active public cooperation needs to be availed of," she added.
Khaleda Zia said many questions and doubts were created in public minds due to the sudden rise in militancy at this sensitive time and lack of transparency in anti-militancy drives. "All doubts must be removed."
