Dhaka: India has sought a proposal from Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) over its investment plan in India for opening a warehouse for RMG products.

BGMEA President M Atiqul Islam has got a call from Indian High Commissioner Pankaj Saran in Dhaka in this regard, a BGMEA source said.

The BGMEA is likely to send a proposal in this regard on Sunday, according to the source.

When they met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Dhaka on 7 June, the business leaders, led by FBCCI president Abdul Matlub Ahmec, demanded 50 acres of land in India for investing in the RMG sector.

Modi welcomed the demand, Matlub Ahmed said quoting the Indian Prime Minister.

Bangladesh business leaders also proposed India to form a Bangladesh-India Joint Private Sector Working Group to further ease Indian investment in Bangladesh and boost Bangladesh exports to the neighbouring country.

He told reporters after the meeting that the deals, including agreements and MoUs, that have been signed between Bangladesh and India during the historic visit of Modi to Bangladesh would take the trade and commerce relationship of Bangladesh-India to a newer height.

‘Through the signing of these agreements and instruments, initiatives are there to reduce the BD-India trade gap as well as boosting exports from Bangladesh to India,’ he added.

The FBCCI President said a new horizon on the business relationship of the two countries is being sighted following the successful visit of Narendra Modi to Bangladesh.
