Boat capsize: 5 bodies recovered from River Padma

Rajshahi: Five bodies including two children were recovered around 35 hours into they went missing after a boat capsized in the River Padma near Rajshahi city on Sunday evening.

Rajshahi Fire Service Deputy Director Nurul Islam said bodies of two madrassa students were found floating near Talaimari Fultala terminal, some kilometer far from the accident spot at about 6:00am on Tuesday.

Later, the fire fighter recovered two more bodies in Char Shatbaria area and another from Tangan area.

The fire fighters brought the bodies to Borokuthi terminal and handed over those to the Boalia police. Police handed over the bodies to the deceased’s families.
The deceased are Abdul Ahad, student of Shah Makhdum Madrassa, son of Chapainawabganj’s Abdul Aziz, Tamim, both were 10 years old, Rafiq, the boatman, Asadul, a resident of Padma’s Moddho char and Robin, a street food vendor. Tamim, Rafiq, and Robin were residents of Darogapara of Rajshahi city.

A boat carrying six passengers sank in the river at about 7:00pm as a nor’wester lashed Rajshahi on Sunday.

A passenger swam shore while five others went missing.

Divers of fire service started rescue operation on Monday morning.

However, the fire fighters called off rescued drive on Monday evening as they failed to trace any bodies in River Padma.

The divers were supposed to resume their drive from Tuesday morning.
