Sculptor Abdullah Khalid laid to rest

Dhaka: Eminent sculptor Syed Abdullah Khalid, who passed away in the city on Saturday, was laid to rest at Martyred Intellectuals' graveyard on Sunday.
He was buried after his namaz-e-janaza was at DU Central Mosque after Zohr prayers.
Earlier, Khalid's body was kept at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Dhaka University at 11 am and at the foot of Aparajeyo Bangla around 12:15 pm where people from all walks of life paid their last tributes to the sculptor.
The Ekushey Padak winner sculptor died at Birdem Hospital in the city on Saturday night at the age of 75. He was undergoing treatment at the hospital due to complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
The noted sculptor left his wife, two sons, a daughter and a host of relatives and well wishers to mourn his death.
Meanwhile, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock at the death of Khalid and conveyed their sympathy to the bereaved family members.
After laying a wreath on the coffin of Khalid at the foot of Aparajeyo Bangla Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor said the name of the Syed Abdullah Khalid will be remembered as the symbol of inspiration and for his contributions to the development of sculpture.
Director General of Bangla Academy Shamsuzzaman Khan, President of DU Teacher Association ASM Maksud Kamal, Sammalito Sanskritik Jote and many other organizations paid their homage to Khalid.
Abdullah Khalid's sculpture Aparajeyo Bangla is one of the most well known sculptures dedicated to the Liberation War in 1971. It is located on the campus of Dhaka University, just in front to the Faculty of Arts Building. In Bengali, the phrase means "Unvanquished Bengal".
His other works includes the Terracotta relief on socio-cultural heritage at the Bangladesh Bank Head Office and a 447-sft Mural Abahaman Bangla at the Bangladesh Television Centre.
Khalid was honored by the state through issuance of Commemorative Stamp (1990-91) and Silver Coin (1998) on his most notable work, the Aparajeyo Bangla.
Born in Sylhet in 1942, Khalid completed his BFA in painting in 1969 from East Pakistan College of Arts and Crafts (presently Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka) and did his MFA in painting and sculpture from the Chittagong University.
Khalid was a professor at the Sculpture Department of Institute of Fine Arts at Dhaka University until his death.
